The big homie came back, and he did not come to play.
If you were anywhere near social media this weekend, your timeline was probably melting down. Jay-Z took the stage at the Roots Picnic in Philly for his first major solo set in seven years, and he used his time to remind everyone exactly why he sits at the top of the food chain.
Forget a standard concert, Hov blessed the crowd with a brutal, four-minute acapella freestyle that took direct aim at basically everyone who has breathed his name wrong over the last few years.
Grab some popcorn, because we are breaking down the absolute wildest moments from the verse.
1. The Drake Counter-Attack
Drake thought he had a slick one on “Janice STFU” when he rapped “the jig is up,” but Hov sent the missile right back. Jay rapped:
“The jig is up / N*a I’m up 10 / Wrong chart, champ, you gotta look up again.”
He didn’t stop at the charts, either. He took a shot at Drake’s corporate deals, telling him to go talk tough to the people who own his publishing checks. Safe to say, the student is still learning from the master.
2. A Sub for Kanye
Jay finally addressed Kanye’s endless online rants regarding his family, and he kept it icy cold. He reminded Ye of his own family’s genius, rapping:
“You ever heard of wonder-kin? My children are some of them… Have you n*as no shame? You really wanna get under my skin? I’ll really get under ya skin.”
3. Cleaning Up the Dame Dash Drama
If you saw that viral video of Dame Dash losing his dental implants, you knew Jay was going to mention it. Hov cleared his name of any bad business rumors with a hilarious bar:
“N*as’ teeth is tumbling out they mouth and somehow I’m the one who done it, it’s a murder mystery game.”
4. The Billion-Dollar “B” Wordplay
Leave it to Jay-Z to drop a line that protects his wealth and shouts out his wife all at once. He told the world that the price of the brick is going up, and “it’s gon’ cost you a B to even say my name.” That’s a double-entendre for a Billion, and a nod to Queen Bey herself. Genius.
The King’s Return
Backed by The Roots, Jay ran through a massive 30-song set list and brought out local legends like Meek Mill and State Property. This whole performance feels like a massive warning shot before he hits Yankee Stadium this July to celebrate the anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.
The throne is still occupied, folks.
