Back in the early 2000s, there were rumors that Eminem and Mariah Carey were romantically involved — until things took a sharp left turn. What followed was a messy and very public feud, complete with diss tracks from Eminem and Mariah’s now-iconic clapback, Obsessed.
Now, producer Damion Young is spilling new tea on what may have sparked the drama in the first place.
According to Young, Eminem once asked Mariah to play his mother in his semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile. The issue? Mariah is only four years older than him.
“She did not like that [stuff] at all,” Young said. “Her insecurities kicked in big time.”
Needless to say, she turned the role down. The part eventually went to Kim Basinger — who, for the record, is 19 years older than Eminem and a much more age-appropriate choice for the role.
And just like that, one casting suggestion may have been the spark that lit a years-long celebrity feud.
